"Abusive": Peru President Slams Raids At Her Home Over Luxury Watches Probe
Peru's President Dina Boluarte labeled the police and prosecutor raids on her home and the presidential palace as "abusive."
These actions are part of an investigation into allegations of unreported ownership of luxury watches and potential illicit enrichment.
Despite the raids, which involved roughly 40 officials, Boluarte refused to resign, insisting on her integrity and planning to serve until 2026. The president criticized the raids as excessive during a press conference.
The operation, which involved searches in Boluarte's Surquillo district home and the nearby palace, proceeded smoothly, according to the presidency's statements on social media.
Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen also contested the raids, highlighting their negative impact on the country's investment climate and deeming them unconstitutional.
The scrutiny began two weeks prior, following media reports by La-Encerrona, suggesting Boluarte owned several Rolex watches. Despite attempts by prosecutors to inspect these claims further, a scheduling conflict prevented a planned check at the president's office.
Boluarte, who took office in December 2022, admitted ownership of the watches, claiming they were purchased with her earnings. This investigation continues Peru's trend of probing its leaders and high-ranking officials for misconduct.
