Amazon joins the Dow, the 'elite' club of the US stock market's biggest companies
Amazon will join the prestigious Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), replacing Walgreens Boots Alliance before the stock market opens on Monday.
The DJIA, established in 1896, features 30 key US companies, including tech titans like Microsoft and Apple. Amazon's inclusion, coinciding with Walmart's 3-for-1 stock split, adjusts the price-weighted index's company weightings.
With the change, Seattle's Amazon will hold 17th place in the Dow's rankings, while Walmart drops to 26th. Additionally, Uber will enter the Dow Jones Transportation Average, taking over from JetBlue Airways.
These changes reflect the dynamic US economy and diversify the sectors represented within the indices. Post-announcement, Amazon and Uber saw a slight uptick in their stock prices.
