At Least One Dead, Nine Injured in Michigan Church Shooting and Fire

Gunman drives into Mormon church in Grand Blanc, opens fire and sets building ablaze before being shot dead by police
A devastating attack struck a church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, during Sunday services, leaving at least one person dead and nine more wounded.

The suspect, believed to be a forty-year-old man from Burton, drove a vehicle through the front doors of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, then exited and opened fire.

Following an exchange of gunfire with responding officers, the suspect was killed at the scene.

Smoke and flames consumed portions of the building after the vehicle breach, and firefighters worked to contain the blaze while emergency crews evacuated worshippers and treated the injured.

Hundreds were reportedly inside when the attack occurred, and authorities warn that additional victims may still be found amid the charred remains.

Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renye described the gunman’s actions as deliberate and confirmed that investigators believe he also started the fire.

The motives behind the assault remain uncertain.

State and federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, have joined the investigation.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow, saying the violence in a place of worship is “unacceptable” and offering support to the local community.

National leaders, including the U.S. Attorney General and President Donald Trump, issued prayers for the victims and condemned the act, with Trump calling it a “targeted attack on Christians”.

The church, already reeling from a memorial service held after the passing of its president just one day earlier, now faces a haunting tragedy.

As investigators comb through the ruins, the community prepares to confront grief, questions, and the urgent need for answers about how this violence penetrated a sacred space.
