Former Prime Minister Faces Charges of Crimes Against Humanity
Dhaka, Bangladesh: The interim government of Bangladesh is pursuing a trial for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the International Criminal Court (ICC), even as she faces domestic charges at the Internal Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh (ICT-BD).
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, who assumed his role on August 8 after Hasina fled to India, met with ICC prosecutor Karim A Khan to discuss this initiative.
Hasina is accused of committing 'massacres' during a recent mass uprising and enforced disappearances throughout her 15-year tenure.
The ICT-BD has already issued an arrest warrant for Hasina and several Awami League members, while Bangladesh has sought Interpol's help for her extradition from India.
Besides addressing Hasina's charges, Yunus and Khan also discussed the Rohingya crisis and sought accountability for Myanmar's actions against the Rohingya.
Khan revealed that the ICC has requested an arrest warrant for Myanmar military leader Min Aung Hlaing for crimes against humanity.
