Chinese Researcher Arrested for Smuggling Biological Materials into U.S.
Wuhan-based scientist accused of illegally transporting roundworm samples to Michigan lab
Chengxuan Han, a researcher from Wuhan, China, has been arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport for allegedly smuggling biological materials related to roundworms into the United States.
Authorities report that Han falsely declared the contents of her packages as plastic cups and attempted to erase data from her electronic devices prior to travel.
The materials were intended for a laboratory at the University of Michigan.
Han's arrest follows previous cases involving Chinese nationals accused of smuggling agricultural pathogens, raising concerns about biosecurity and research integrity.
