France Acknowledges Potential ICC Immunity for Israeli PM Netanyahu
French Foreign Ministry Addresses Netanyahu's Immunity from International Criminal Court Arrest
The French foreign ministry has stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is protected by immunity provisions from prosecution at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Despite the ICC issuing arrest warrants for Netanyahu, former Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif this month, the French government recognizes immunity rules for non-member states like Israel.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot highlighted this stance, noting that decisions on arresting individuals with such immunity ultimately fall to judicial authorities.
In a cautious response differing from some European nations, France underscores its commitment to international justice while respecting immunity under international law.
This position, however, drew criticism from Amnesty International and political figures, who argue it conflicts with France's obligations as an ICC member.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu reportedly discussed the issue with President Emmanuel Macron, expressing his concerns.
Despite potential diplomatic tensions, France is involved in facilitating a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, reflecting its active role in Middle Eastern peace efforts.
