Frozen Embryos Created Through IVF Are Babies, Says Nikki Haley
Nikki Haley, a Republican Presidential candidate, views frozen embryos from IVF as "babies." During her tenure as governor, she enacted a 20-week abortion ban with no allowances for rape or incest.
Echoing the stance of the Alabama Supreme Court—a sentiment likely to appeal to conservative voters—she held fast to this belief in a recent NBC News interview, just before the South Carolina primary.
While Haley somewhat softened her position when later speaking with CNN hosts Gayle King and Charles Barkley, she still maintained that embryos should be considered "unborn babies," highlighting the obligation physicians have to honor parental wishes regarding embryo treatment.
Her commitment to the pro-life cause is long-standing, as she advocated for state-level autonomy over abortion laws during past GOP primary debates.
The strategy may be crucial in her home state of South Carolina, where a large evangelical electorate favors such views. Despite this, Haley lags substantially behind Donald Trump in state polls.
Haley faces a challenging road to the nomination, especially if Trump secures a significant victory in South Carolina after previous wins in Iowa and New Hampshire. Despite the odds, she intends to remain in the race at least until Super Tuesday on March 5.
Regarding the potential repercussions of the Alabama ruling on IVF treatments, Haley stressed on NBC the importance of a doctor-patient dialogue, underlining the sensitivity and personal nature of such matters.
