U.S. Intelligence Chief Refers Classified Leak Cases to Justice Department

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard initiates criminal referrals over unauthorized disclosures to media outlets
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has submitted two criminal referrals to the Department of Justice concerning alleged leaks of classified information by intelligence community personnel.

A third referral is anticipated, according to officials.

The referrals pertain to unauthorized disclosures of sensitive information to media organizations, including a recent report by the Washington Post.

Gabbard emphasized the risks posed by politicization and unauthorized leaks within the intelligence community, stating that such actions compromise national security.

An official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) indicated that these referrals are part of a broader initiative to address unauthorized disclosures.

The process involves an internal review followed by submission to the Justice Department, which may then involve the Federal Bureau of Investigation for further investigation.

Gabbard, overseeing 18 U.S. intelligence agencies, has recently established the Director's Initiative Group (DIG) to enhance transparency and accountability within the intelligence community.

The task force is tasked with investigating unauthorized disclosures, addressing politicization, and declassifying information deemed to serve the public interest.

In addition to addressing leaks, Gabbard has taken action against misconduct within the intelligence community.

Approximately 100 employees are facing termination for participating in inappropriate activities on classified communication platforms.

These measures align with the administration's efforts to reinforce the integrity of the intelligence community and ensure adherence to legal and ethical standards.
