Labour Party to Pledge Recognition of Palestinian State in Election Manifesto
The UK’s opposition Labour Party is expected to pledge recognition of a Palestinian state at an appropriate time in peace talks in its election manifesto. This manifesto will also ensure that recognizing a Palestinian state is not vetoed by a neighboring country. Labour leader Keir Starmer stated he aims to recognize a Palestinian state if he comes to power, but the timing must be right within the peace process.
The UK’s opposition Labour Party is expected to include a commitment to recognize a Palestinian state at an appropriate time in peace talks in its election manifesto.
The Guardian reports that the manifesto will also ensure that recognizing a Palestinian state is not vetoed by a neighboring country.
Labour leader Keir Starmer stated last month that he aims to recognize a Palestinian state if he comes to power, but emphasized that the timing must be right within the peace process.
This pledge aligns with a statement by Foreign Secretary David Cameron, who said Britain could recognize a Palestinian state if irreversible progress towards a two-state solution is shown.
Including this pledge in the manifesto may address criticisms of Labour’s stance on the Gaza conflict.
The manifesto will be finalized in a meeting with unions on Friday and presented next Thursday.
