Liverpool Parade Incident: Driver Arrested Following Collision with Celebrants

A driver has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a car collided with crowds celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title victory, injuring dozens.
A man has been arrested for allegedly driving his vehicle into crowds celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title victory.

The incident occurred on Water Street, where thousands of football fans gathered to witness a parade on Tuesday AEST.

The collision involved a Ford Galaxy and resulted in injuries to 64 individuals, including four children.

As of the latest reports, 11 individuals remain hospitalized in stable condition.

The police have stated that Water Street had been closed to traffic prior to the incident.

However, they allege that the driver managed to follow an ambulance that was responding to a medical emergency.

This ambulance had passed through a temporary roadblock intended to manage traffic during the festivities.

The arrested individual is a 53-year-old white British man, who is being held on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of drugs.

However, no formal charges have yet been filed against him.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims reported that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.

The event, which was meant to celebrate Liverpool's victory, has left the community in shock.

Charles, a spokesperson for the city, expressed the devastation felt by many, emphasizing that what should have been a joyful occasion has led to distressing outcomes.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also conveyed his shock, extending thoughts and prayers to those affected, invoking the club's famous anthem, 'You'll Never Walk Alone', which had been sung by fans earlier in the day.

Local authorities have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism.

The city of Liverpool will continue its investigative efforts to ensure the safety and security of future public celebrations.
