Macron Calls Snap Legislative Elections After Far-Right Victory

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Sunday that he is dissolving parliament and calling for snap legislative elections after the far-right trounced his centrist alliance in the EU polls. The first round of elections for the National Assembly will be on June 30, with the second round on July 7. Macron highlighted the significant support for far-right parties, which account for nearly 40 percent of the vote in France.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Sunday, June 9, 2024, that he will dissolve parliament and call for snap legislative elections after his centrist alliance was defeated by the far-right in EU elections.

The first round of the National Assembly elections is scheduled for June 30, with the second round on July 7.

Macron expressed concern over the far-right's progress, noting that nearly 40 percent of the vote in France went to such parties, including the National Rally (RN) led by Jordan Bardella.

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right, welcomed the decision and expressed readiness to take power.

This development is crucial as France looks ahead to the 2027 presidential elections, where Macron cannot run, and Le Pen sees an opportunity to win the Élysée Palace.
