Allexis Ferrell, a 27-year-old woman from Ohio, has been sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to the felony charge of animal cruelty for killing and consuming a cat.

The incident occurred in August outside her home, where she was recorded on police bodycam footage eating the animal as her neighbors watched in shock.

Stark County Common Pleas Judge Frank Forchione described the act as a national embarrassment and a danger to the community.

Ferrell's sentence will run consecutively with an existing 18-month sentence for previous convictions, including theft and child endangerment.

Her attorney, Stephen Kandel, pointed to Ferrell's struggles with substance abuse and indicated plans for her to receive inpatient treatment post-release.

The case garnered attention when it was mistakenly linked to false claims about immigrant behavior during an online presidential campaign.

However, officials confirmed Ferrell is a native of Ohio, having graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 2015.

Stark County Prosecutor Chelsea Small labeled the case among the most disturbing she had encountered.
