A prolonged military operation concludes after militants seize a passenger train in Balochistan, resulting in multiple fatalities.
The Pakistani army announced the successful rescue of over 300 hostages from a passenger train that had been hijacked by militants in Balochistan province on Tuesday.

The military reported that the operation led to the deaths of 33 militants.

Prior to the military's intervention, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) had killed 21 civilian hostages and four military personnel.

This violent incident marked a significant escalation, with approximately 440 passengers on board the train during the attack.

Eyewitness accounts describe the tense atmosphere, with militants reportedly using hostages as human shields and threatening to execute captives if their demands for the release of Baloch political prisoners were not met within 48 hours.

The train was forcibly stopped when militants detonated explosives, damaging a section of the railway track and launching a direct assault as the train was passing through a mountainous tunnel.

Communication challenges impeded initial rescue efforts, as the remote location lacked internet and mobile service.

After the hijacking, several passengers escaped and made their way on foot to a nearby railway station, enduring strenuous conditions in the rugged terrain.

The military deployed helicopters and hundreds of troops to aid the rescue operation.

The BLA has gained international notoriety and is classified as a terrorist organization by both Pakistani authorities and several Western nations, including the United States and the United Kingdom.

The group seeks greater autonomy or independence for Balochistan, accusing the central government of neglecting the province while exploiting its rich mineral resources.

This incident has drawn attention to a rising trend of violence and instability in Balochistan, a region that has faced ongoing insurgent activity for decades.

In recent years, the frequency and intensity of militant operations, including attacks on security forces and public transport, have increased.

The BLA has been linked to numerous assaults that have resulted in significant casualties, demonstrating a marked capacity for coordinated and violent actions against state authority.

Officials state that around 100 passengers on the train were members of the security forces, underscoring the ongoing conflict in a region where law enforcement and insurgent groups frequently clash.

The rail hijacking has been described as unprecedented, raising concerns regarding the effectiveness of military responses to escalating insurgent tactics.

As investigations continue, the military has committed to pursuing those involved in the attack and restoring security to the area, where operations are ongoing to account for any remaining threats and to secure the safety of the general population.
