Pakistani Authorities Arrest 16 for Spreading False Rape News
Authorities in Pakistan have arrested sixteen vloggers and TikTokers for circulating false stories of a rape that triggered protests in Punjab. An investigative report found no evidence of the crime, suggesting political exploitation by Imran Khan's party. The crackdown involves social media account blocks and upcoming arrests linked to protests' violence.
In Lahore, law enforcement agencies have detained sixteen vloggers and TikTokers for allegedly spreading false information regarding a rape incident that incited widespread protests in Punjab province.
According to Senior Punjab Police Officer Imran Kishwar, these individuals contributed to escalating the situation, leading to over fifty injuries and one fatality among security personnel.
The Federal Investigation Agency has identified and blocked one hundred thirty-eight social media accounts associated with spreading this misinformation.
Additionally, an investigative committee established by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz found no evidence of the claimed rape at the Lahore women's college, stirring allegations that Imran Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, leveraged the situation for political gain.
