Paris Olympic Triathlon Delayed Due to Seine Water Quality Concerns

The men's Olympic triathlon in Paris has been postponed over water quality concerns in the Seine River. Rescheduled for Wednesday, the event depends on further E. coli level tests. Despite a 1.4 billion euro investment to improve water quality, rain and storms have worsened bacteria levels.
The men's Olympic triathlon in Paris has been postponed due to concerns over water quality in the Seine River.

Initially planned for Tuesday, the event might now take place on Wednesday, subject to further water quality tests.

The women's competition, also scheduled for Wednesday, could face similar delays.

Weather forecasts predict storms and rain that can worsen bacteria levels, further complicating the schedule.

Despite Paris investing 1.4 billion euros to improve water quality, E. coli levels remain problematic.

Paris 2024 Director of Sports Aurélie Merle stated that the project is strong, but unexpected meteorological events have impacted water quality.

Paris Deputy Mayor Pierre Rabadan indicated that while trends are improving, current E. coli levels still exceed acceptable limits.

Daily water quality tests monitor faecal bacteria, with European rules setting a safe limit of 900 colony-forming units per 100 millilitres.

Some test sites recorded levels above this threshold on Tuesday. Backup dates and alternative locations are being considered if issues persist.
