Switzerland Urged to Reconsider Its 500-Year Neutrality

Switzerland is advised to reconsider its neutrality, in place since 1515, by working more closely with the EU and NATO. A report suggests increasing the defense budget and lifting the arms re-export ban amid the worsening geopolitical climate in Europe, notably due to Russia's actions against Ukraine. The recommendations are expected to shape the new security policy in 2025, though critics argue the panel was biased.
A group of Swiss experts has recommended that Switzerland redefines its long-standing neutrality, which has been in place since 1515.

Commissioned by the Swiss Defense Ministry, the report suggests enhancing the nation's security by cooperating more closely with the EU and NATO.

Key recommendations include increasing the defense budget from 0.75% to 1% of GDP by 2030 and lifting the 1998 ban on re-exporting arms to conflict areas.

The experts argue these changes are necessary due to the deteriorating geopolitical situation in Europe, especially in light of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The findings are expected to influence Switzerland's new security policy, set to be unveiled in 2025, though critics claim the panel was biased against neutrality.
