Trump Involves Putin in Attempts to Settle the Ukraine Crisis
US President Donald Trump discloses conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin focused on bringing an end to the Ukraine war, as the conflict approaches its three-year mark.
US President Donald Trump has stated publicly that he has been in contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding efforts to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
In an interview aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump noted that he has had multiple conversations with Putin, although he did not reveal the exact number of talks.
'He (Putin) wants to see people stop dying,' Trump told the New York Post.
Neither the Kremlin nor the White House has immediately responded to a Reuters query about Trump's claims concerning his talks with Putin.
On January 28, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that Putin is open to a phone call with Trump and is waiting for confirmation from Washington about its willingness to engage in such a conversation.
During the interview, Trump also indicated he might meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy next week to discuss ways to end the conflict.
The war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, is nearing its third year.
Since the start of the conflict, there have been significant casualties, with thousands reported dead, mostly among Ukrainians.
Trump characterized his previous relationship with Putin as positive and claimed to have a concrete plan to resolve the conflict, though he did not share specific details.
He expressed urgency, saying, 'I hope it's fast. Every day people are dying. This war is so bad in Ukraine. I want to end this damn thing.'
The situation continues to evolve, with ongoing international efforts to support Ukraine and address the humanitarian crisis arising from the war.
