Trump Proposes U.S. Management of Ukraine's Nuclear Plants Amid Ongoing Peace Negotiations

Trump Proposes U.S. Management of Ukraine's Nuclear Plants Amid Ongoing Peace Negotiations

U.S. President Donald Trump suggests American oversight of Ukraine's nuclear facilities during discussions with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, amidst skepticism over Russia's intentions.
In a notable development regarding international diplomatic efforts, U.S. President Donald Trump has floated the idea of the United States taking ownership and management of Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

This proposal was made during a call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reflecting a strategic approach to bolster Ukrainian security against potential Russian aggression.

Trump characterized the conversation as 'very good' and highlighted the possible benefits of U.S. expertise in managing Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

The talk, which took place on March 19, 2025, was marked by a discussion on a potential ceasefire, with Trump noting that advancements toward achieving peace could hinge on halting strikes on civilian infrastructure.

Zelenskyy expressed a willingness to support de-escalation measures, emphasizing the importance of constructive dialogue.

Former British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly expressed concerns about Trump's perceived urgency in reaching a peace agreement.

In remarks made to a media outlet, Cleverly suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin might exploit Trump's desire for a quick resolution, potentially undermining lasting peace and giving Russia an opportunity to regroup militarily.

During their conversation, Trump outlined several key issues, including the situation in the Kursk region and the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

Zelenskyy reiterated his request for enhanced air defense capabilities, particularly advanced systems such as the Patriot missile defense, while both leaders acknowledged plans for future meetings of technical teams aimed at coordinating ceasefire efforts in Saudi Arabia.

Despite the optimistic tone of their dialogue, Zelenskyy warned about Russia's ongoing military actions.

He noted that even after the positive discussions, Russian drone attacks persistently targeted Ukrainian energy facilities, causing significant damage.

This has led Zelenskyy to accuse Russia of conflicting its commitments regarding a ceasefire, with reports indicating that drone strikes continued in the aftermath of the Trump-Putin call.

Additionally, Zelenskyy has drawn a firm line on negotiations, stating that any peace talks must include Ukraine, and he will not accept the loss of territories claimed by Russia.

He stressed the necessity for clear terms regarding the release of prisoners and assurances to prevent the resurgence of hostilities.

As the situation develops, the international community remains watchful of the potential implications stemming from Trump's proposal on Ukraine's nuclear infrastructure and the evolving dynamics of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
