UK Graduate Job Vacancies Plunge 45% to Lowest Levels on Record
Entry-level roles for university leavers drop to 8,383 in July amid corporate AI adoption and rising employment costs, creating an unprecedented hiring drought.
Graduate job vacancies across the United Kingdom dropped to the lowest levels on record in July, plunging 45 percent compared to the same period last year as corporate automation and higher employment costs sharply constrained entry-level hiring.
Figures compiled by employment analytics platform Adzuna show that employers advertised just 8,383 positions specifically designated for university leavers, marking an 85 percent decline from a peak of more than 55,000 openings recorded in 2017.
The contraction in graduate recruitment coincides with the arrival of a record 262,820 eighteen-year-olds entering university degree programs following this month's A-level results.
The widening gap between the volume of incoming graduates and available professional roles has intensified competition across the economy, with the average number of jobseekers competing per vacancy rising to 2.14.
Recruiters and corporate analysts attribute the hiring slowdown to a combination of rising employer National Insurance contributions, statutory minimum wage adjustments, and the rapid deployment of artificial intelligence tools by major accounting, legal, and financial services firms to automate administrative workloads traditionally handled by junior staff.
The average advertised graduate salary settled at £25,813 last month, roughly matching the earnings of a full-time position on the statutory minimum wage rate of £12.71 per hour.
The decline in graduate opportunities forms part of a broader macroeconomic slowdown that saw total advertised vacancies across all sectors fall to 791,490 in July.
While sectors such as construction, teaching, and travel experienced modest demand, job postings within logistics, hospitality, and healthcare retreated, with nursing and healthcare advertisements falling by 30 percent over the past twelve months.
In response to mounting youth unemployment, which has seen more than 16 percent of young adults aged 16 to 24 seeking work, government representatives pointed to a £2.5 billion youth employment package intended to create work and training placements, while ministers prepare broader policy reforms to expand technical qualifications ahead of the autumn budget.
