Ukraine Launches Major Drone Strikes Amidst Peace Talks with the US

A significant drone attack on Moscow on March 11 highlights Ukraine's ongoing military capabilities despite recent changes in US intelligence support.
In a significant military operation, Ukraine launched its largest drone assault on Moscow and surrounding areas, deploying a total of 337 drones on March 11, 2025. Russia's defense ministry reported that 91 of these drones were aimed specifically at the capital, contributing to a larger wave of attacks that spanned across multiple regions including Kursk.

The assault has reportedly resulted in at least three fatalities and extensive disruptions, as all four airports in Moscow were temporarily closed due to the threat presented by the drone strikes.

Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed the success of the city’s air defenses in intercepting many of the incoming drones, but acknowledged that the attacks caused some damage to residential buildings with visible impacts in local communities.

Reports indicated that the drone fragments struck a car park in Domodedovo, resulting in fires and subsequent casualty reports.

Emergency services were deployed to the affected areas, assessing damage to residential structures in regions surrounding the capital.

Ukraine's drone capabilities have developed considerably, with many drones reportedly manufactured domestically.

This recent operation highlights the strength of Ukraine's long-range drone technology, which has been further empowered by ongoing support and intelligence-sharing from European allies, including France and the UK.

The timing of this drone strike coincided with critical negotiations between Ukrainian and U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia, where discussions were rumored to include a potential ceasefire agreement covering the Black Sea and other military operations.

The Ukrainian government has framed the drone attack as part of its strategy to advocate for an air truce, countering claims that Kyiv is uninterested in peace.

Amid this backdrop, U.S. President Donald Trump's recent decision to withhold military intelligence has raised questions about the implications for Ukraine's operational capacity on the battlefield.

Since taking office, the Trump administration has prioritized direct negotiations with Russia, seeking to facilitate dialogue between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, the long-term impact of reduced intelligence support remains to be fully assessed.

Recent developments in the ongoing conflict have also seen escalated Russian military actions, particularly their attempts to encircle Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, with reported involvement from North Korean troops.

This highlights the ongoing and complex dynamics of the battle front, which are likely to influence the outcomes of any negotiations in progress.

The attack on March 11 marks a notable escalation in the conflict in a landscape heavily influenced by both military actions and diplomatic maneuvering.

As the situation unfolds, the region remains on alert as officials continue to monitor and respond to the evolving military and political conditions.
