Ukraine Strikes Russian Airfields in Large-Scale Drone Assault
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praises the operation that targeted over 40 Russian bombers, marking a significant military achievement.
On June 1, 2025, Ukraine executed a large-scale drone attack against Russian airfields, successfully targeting more than 40 bombers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the operation as an 'absolutely brilliant' result, emphasizing that it represents the most extensive range operation conducted by Ukraine since the onset of hostilities.
According to Zelenskyy, the planning and execution of the attack took one year, six months, and nine days, and involved significant preparation to ensure the safety of the operatives involved.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that a total of 117 drones were deployed in the operation, designated as 'Operation Spider's Web.' The SBU disclosed that approximately 34% of Russia's strategic bombers capable of launching cruise missiles were struck during the assault, which is believed to have inflicted financial losses on Russia estimated at $7 billion.
Video footage reportedly shared by the SBU showcased multiple Russian strategic bombers engulfed in flames across airfields located in the regions of Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur.
The Ministry of Defence of Russia addressed the attacks, describing them as a 'terrorist attack' and stating that their forces successfully repelled the strikes.
However, they acknowledged that several pieces of aviation equipment were set ablaze as a result of the drone incursions, with subsequent reports indicating that the fires had been extinguished.
Sources indicate that the drones were transported in special containers by truck before being launched from locations adjacent to Russian military targets.
This tactic enabled the attack to significantly breach the natural defensive positions that were traditionally expected to protect these airfields.
As evident from the unfolding events, the Ukrainian aerial offensive appears to signify a concerted effort to diminish the Russian military's missile capabilities directed at Ukraine.
This operation readily precedes the anticipated second round of discussions between Ukrainian and Russian officials, scheduled to take place in Istanbul shortly.
Additionally, Zelenskyy assured the public that details regarding the operation would be disclosed as appropriate, underscoring Ukraine's ongoing commitment to self-defense amid the protracted conflict instigated by Russia.
