US School Legally Punished Black Student Over Hairstyle, Judge Rules
A judge ruled that a high school in Texas legally punished 18-year-old Darryl George, who wears his hair in locs, for violating its dress code.
George has been isolated from his peers at Barbers Hill High School since last August because the school claims his hairstyle exceeds the length allowed by their policy.
The Texas CROWN Act protects against discrimination based on hair texture or styles historically tied to race, but does not address hair length. Judge Chap Cain upheld the school's disciplinary action, stating it doesn't breach the law.
George, stating his hairstyle connects him to his heritage, and his legal team, led by Allie Booker, intend to appeal the decision.
After the ruling, George was reportedly distressed, questioning the impact of his hairstyle on his education. The school denies any discrimination, yet the outcome of the federal appeal remains to be seen.
