Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday condemned the vandalism of the US consulate in Sydney, attributing the damage to a pro-Palestinian protest.
At around 3 a.m. local time, a person using a small sledgehammer defaced the building in the northern suburbs, spraying paint and damaging nine windows and the door.
Albanese called for respectful political discourse, noting that such acts of vandalism do not advance any cause.
Police cited CCTV footage showing the suspect wearing a dark hoodie and carrying a small sledgehammer.
The US consulate confirmed the damage but reported no impact on staff or operations.
Australian Federal Police and New South Wales Police are investigating the incident, which follows similar graffiti attacks on US consulates in Sydney and Melbourne in April and May. This comes amidst growing criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza from Australia, where protests at universities have recently erupted.
