Buenos Aires Canal Turns Crimson Amid Environmental Concerns
Residents baffled as Sarandi Canal's waters change color, prompting investigation by local authorities.
On February 6, 2025, the Sarandi Canal in a suburb of Buenos Aires, Argentina, unexpectedly transformed into a vivid shade of red, alarming local residents and raising environmental concerns.
The discolored water flowed into the Río de la Plata estuary, which is adjacent to a protected ecological reserve.
Various reports from local media indicate that residents detected a strong and unpleasant odor coming from the canal, described by one resident, Maria Ducomls, as nauseating.
"The smell woke us up.
It looked like a river covered in blood, it's horrible," she stated, emphasizing the distress caused by the incident.
Speculation regarding the cause of the discoloration has emerged, with local sources suggesting potential illegal dumping of textile dye or chemical waste from nearby industrial facilities.
The Sarandi Canal flows through an area populated with textile factories and tanneries, which have previously faced accusations of releasing pollutants into local waterways.
In light of these events, Argentina's Environment Ministry has taken action by collecting water samples from the canal.
A statement from the Ministry confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify the substances responsible for the alarming color change.
The ministry dispatched a mobile analysis laboratory to the site, where two liters of water were extracted for chemical analysis and liquid chromatography.
The ministry noted, "We received a report that the waters of the Sarandí Canal had been dyed red," and indicated that it is hypothesized the discolored water may contain some form of organic coloring.
This incident is part of a broader concern regarding industrial pollution and its impact on local ecosystems in Buenos Aires.
Similar occurrences in this canal have been reported in the past, with residents mentioning varying hues of bluish, greenish, pink, and yellow water, often accompanied by unpleasant odors.
These recurring environmental issues have sparked frustration and concern among those living near the Sarandi Canal, who have voiced their dissatisfaction with the lack of accountability and action regarding localized pollution that affects their quality of life.
