Ceasefire Agreement Reached Between the US and Yemen's Houthis Amid Rising Tensions
US halts bombing campaign as Houthis agree to cease hostilities, ensuring navigation safety in the Red Sea.
The United States and Yemen's Houthi rebels have reached a ceasefire agreement, announced by mediators on Wednesday, aimed at ensuring "freedom of navigation" in the Red Sea.
The agreement follows a series of tensions in the region, where the Iran-backed Houthis have been implicated in attacks on international shipping.
President Donald Trump confirmed at a White House briefing that the US would cease its bombing campaign against the Houthis after they committed to stopping harassment of maritime vessels.
Trump characterized the rebels' agreement to the ceasefire as a capitulation, noting that a seven-week bombing campaign by the US had resulted in approximately 300 fatalities among Houthi ranks, based on their own reports.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, speaking on behalf of the mediation efforts, emphasized that both sides agreed not to target each other, thereby facilitating the smooth flow of commercial shipping in the area.
"Neither side will target the other," Albusaidi stated, underscoring the importance of de-escalation efforts.
In response to the ceasefire, Mahdi al-Mashar, the political leader of the Houthis, did not directly comment on the ceasefire but indicated a resolute stance toward ongoing tensions with Israel, affirming that missile attacks on Israel would persist.
Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdelsalam warned that any resumption of US bombing would trigger a robust response from the rebels.
Recent escalations included an Israeli airstrike that disabled Sanaa International Airport and targeted key infrastructure within the Houthi-held territory, reportedly leading to casualties and extensive damage.
The Houthi missile campaign has seen incidents where missiles successfully penetrated Israeli air defenses, including an attack near Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport.
The ceasefire is set against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions, with the Houthis asserting solidarity with Palestinian groups and maintaining a posture of continued military engagement against perceived adversaries.
The conflict in Yemen, which has drawn in various international actors, remains complex as diplomatic efforts seek to stabilize the region.
