Fatal Knife Attack on Police Officers in France Declared Islamist Terrorism
A 69-year-old man intervened in a knife attack injuring several police officers in Mulhouse, leading to a national outcry and multiple arrests.
A knife attack in Mulhouse, eastern France, on February 22, 2025, resulted in the death of a 69-year-old man and severe injuries to multiple police officers.
The attack occurred during a demonstration supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo, coinciding with a significant public gathering in the area.
The attack was executed by a 37-year-old male, identified as an Algerian national, who reportedly shouted 'Allahu Akbar' during the assault.
French President Emmanuel Macron described the assault as 'without any doubt an act of Islamist terrorism.' At least two police officers suffered serious injuries, with one sustaining damage to the carotid artery and another to the thorax.
Three other officers were reported to have lighter injuries, and the total number of injured police officers is reported at seven.
The suspected perpetrator was under judicial supervision, subject to house arrest, and had previously been on a terror watchlist, according to France’s anti-terrorism prosecution office.
He arrived in France without proper documentation in 2014 and had been convicted of glorifying terrorism after the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.
Following that, he had been monitored for potential radicalization.
Witnesses confirmed that the attacker shouted the Arabic phrase for 'God is great' multiple times during the episode, which lasted mere minutes in a public area.
A bystander, identified as a Portuguese citizen, was killed while attempting to intervene in the attack.
French officials, including the Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, indicated there has been an increased focus on terrorism-related threats since incidents of a similar nature have spiked in the recent past.
In response to the attack, forensic investigators were deployed to the scene, recovering evidence while a security perimeter was established.
The French army also provided additional support in the area as tensions remained high.
Mayor of Mulhouse, Michèle Lutz, expressed her dismay, stating that 'horror has seized our city.' A 48-hour citywide curfew was imposed in the hope of restoring order and ensuring safety for residents.
Following the attack, four individuals were arrested, including the primary suspect and two of his family members.
Discussions are underway within the French government regarding immigration policies and their relation to security measures, particularly concerning those on the terrorist watchlist.
Macron and other officials are advocating for stricter protocols to handle individuals with documented extremist backgrounds, emphasizing a commitment to eradicating terrorism.
The incident adds to the growing landscape of violence attributed to Islamist extremism in France, a situation that has drawn serious concerns from both governmental and societal leaders about public safety and terrorism management strategies.
