Indian Diplomats in Canada Monitored: Government Raises Alarm
Tension Escalates as Indian Consulate in Vancouver Faces Surveillance
The Indian government revealed in Parliament that its consular officials in Vancouver are under 'audio and video surveillance,' with their private communications intercepted, according to Canadian authorities.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh addressed the matter, emphasizing the necessity of respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty for stable bilateral relations.
The Indian government strongly protested to the Canadian High Commission on November 2, 2024, condemning the surveillance as a violation of diplomatic norms.
Singh criticized Canada's actions as harassment and intimidation, escalating tensions already strained by extremism and violence.
Additionally, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security labeled India under 'Cyber threat from state adversaries' in its 2025-2026 report, a stance India deems as unjustified and part of a 'negative approach.' Relations further deteriorated after accusations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding India's involvement in the killing of Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year.
India rejected these claims and criticized Canada for allowing pro-Khalistan activities.
With a large Indian diaspora in Canada, the situation highlights ongoing diplomatic challenges and security concerns for Indian nationals.
