Mercedes to Introduce a Compact, Budget-Friendly Variant of the G-Class
The legendary off-roader will soon be joined by a new, compact variant featuring a comparable design and impressive off-road abilities, anticipated to hit showrooms by 2026 or 2027.
Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to launch a more compact and budget-friendly version of its iconic G-Class off-roader, anticipated to hit showrooms by late 2026 or early 2027. The upcoming model, temporarily named the 'G,' will preserve the classic aesthetic and robust off-road performance that contributed to the G-Class's popularity, especially following its modern makeover in 2018. Mercedes had previously produced a shorter, three-door iteration of the G-Class, which was discontinued in 2011 due to insufficient demand.
While information on the new model is still sparse, it is expected to uphold the characteristic design features that have made the G-Class a coveted choice among consumers.
The specifics regarding its powertrain remain uncertain, but it is anticipated to offer electric, gasoline, and diesel variants, potentially featuring a more straightforward electric configuration with two motors (one for the front and one for the rear) rather than the four-motor system present in the current electric G-Class.
Mercedes intends to ensure that the new model retains its off-road prowess, possibly incorporating a shortened ladder frame chassis similar to that of the larger G-Class.
For gasoline and diesel versions, it will likely include a transfer case with low-range gearing and three differential locks (center, rear, and front), preserving its off-road qualifications.
Despite the smaller size and lower price, this new model is designed to provide a more accessible entry point into the G-Class range, aiming to enhance Mercedes' revenue in a competitive landscape where Chinese manufacturers continue to be a significant challenge.
