Record-Breaking $1.46 Million Sale of John Jacob Astor's Gold Watch from the Titanic

A gold watch belonging to John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest passenger on the Titanic, sold for a record-breaking £1.17 million ($1.46 million) at an auction in England.
The watch, engraved with Astor's initials, was found on his body after the 1912 shipping disaster.

The pre-sale estimate was between £100,000 and £150,000, but a US buyer outbid other bidders, setting a new record for an object linked to the Titanic.

John Jacob Astor, one of the wealthiest men alive at the time, died at age 47 on the Titanic on April 15, 1912.

He helped his wife, Madeleine, board a lifeboat before his own demise.

His body was recovered a week later, with his watch among his possessions.

The watch was later restored and worn by his son.
