Russian Strikes on Ukraine Result in Casualties Hours After Trump-Putin Call

Six fatalities, including a child, reported following drone attacks in Pryluky and Kharkiv.
At least six people, including a one-year-old child, have been confirmed dead following overnight Russian drone strikes on Ukraine.

The attacks targeted the northern city of Pryluky, resulting in significant damage to residential areas and critical infrastructure.

Regional governor Viacheslav Chaus reported that six drones, identified as Shahed-type, struck the city early Thursday morning, injuring six others who have been hospitalized.

Meanwhile, a separate drone strike in the eastern city of Kharkiv resulted in 17 injuries, which included several children and a pregnant woman, according to regional head Oleh Syniehubov.

The strikes occurred just hours after a phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During this call, Putin warned Trump of a 'very strong' response to Ukraine's recent aerial assaults on Russian military targets.

This conversation marks Trump's first direct communication with Putin in over two weeks, following a similar discussion on May 19. The US president expressed that while the call was productive, it did not lead to immediate prospects for peace in the ongoing conflict.

The backdrop of these attacks includes Ukraine’s recent large-scale drone operation, which targeted over 40 stationary Russian bomber aircraft.

Ukrainian officials indicated that 117 drones were smuggled in special containers before being deployed, successfully destroying several Russian bombers.

The US president alluded to the serious ramifications of these strikes, cautioning that Putin would react strongly in kind.

In a separate report from Germany, General Carsten Breuer, the chief of defence, has warned NATO of the potential for a Russian attack within the next four years.

Breuer mentioned that Russia is producing hundreds of tanks and artillery rounds annually, suggesting a significant military buildup aimed at Western nations.

He emphasized the importance of NATO members ramping up their defense capabilities to counter potential threats.

The overall situation remains tense as both nations engage in retaliatory measures.

Ukraine has called for an unconditional ceasefire, while Russia has rejected this, arguing that it would allow Ukraine to rearm and escalate the conflict further.

As diplomatic efforts continue with no clear resolutions in sight, the conflict presents growing challenges not only for Ukraine but also for NATO and global stability.
