Susan Smith Denied Parole for 1994 Murders of Her Sons

South Carolina Parole Board Unanimously Refuses Release After Emotional Hearing
Susan Smith, convicted of drowning her two sons by rolling her car into a lake in Union County, South Carolina in 1994, was denied parole by the South Carolina Board of Paroles and Pardons.

The board unanimously decided against her release, despite Smith's emotional pleas and assertion that 'God has forgiven' her.

At the hearing, Smith apologized for killing her sons, Michael, 3, and Alex, 14 months, but stopped short of taking full responsibility, attributing some blame to others.

Her ex-husband, David Smith, urged the board to maintain her life sentence, arguing that 30 years is insufficient for the deaths of their children.

Throughout her imprisonment at Leath Correctional Institution, Smith has faced disciplinary issues, including prohibited relationships with corrections officers and drug possession.

She plans to reapply for parole every two years.
