The United States has charged leaders of the Palestinian group Hamas with multiple terrorism-related offenses, according to federal court documents unsealed today.
Six men, including Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar and late political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in July in Tehran, face charges of 'conspiracy to provide material support for acts of terrorism resulting in death' and other counts.
The accusations follow Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered an ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
The charges, as stated by US Attorney General Merrick Garland, aim to target every aspect of Hamas's operations.
The conflict has resulted in over 40,819 deaths in Gaza, mostly women and children, as per the territory's health ministry, and 1,205 deaths in Israel, according to official figures.
