‘Zootopia 2’ Becomes Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Highest-Grossing Film Ever

The animated sequel surpassed 2019’s ‘Frozen 2’ with a global box office total of about $1.46 billion, underscoring its international appeal amid a box office landscape still below pre-pandemic levels.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia 2” has overtaken “Frozen 2” to become the highest-grossing film in the studio’s history, a milestone that highlights both the enduring power of animated storytelling and the shifting dynamics of the global box office.

The sequel has amassed approximately $1.46 billion in worldwide ticket sales since its November 26 release, narrowly surpassing the $1.45 billion grossed by “Frozen 2” in 2019.

Released during the crucial Thanksgiving weekend in the United States, “Zootopia 2” opened to strong figures and quickly crossed the $1 billion mark within just seventeen days of its theatrical debut — a record for both animated films and PG-rated releases.

The sequel reunites audiences with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, whose dynamic partnership in the sprawling animal metropolis of Zootopia has resonated with global viewers.

A significant driver of the film’s success has been its reception in China, where it earned more than $560 million, dominating local ticket sales on its opening weekend and setting new records for international animated films.

Beyond China, robust international performance helped lift the total well above the domestic box office contribution of about $333 million, emphasizing the sequel’s broad appeal outside North America.

Despite ongoing challenges for theatrical releases globally, with overall box office revenues still trailing pre-pandemic 2019 levels, “Zootopia 2” stands as a bright spot for Disney and cinema exhibitors alike.

Its record-setting run not only reinforces the studio’s creative strength but also offers a compelling example of how family-oriented animated features can unite audiences across regions and cultures.
