Countless Phony Reviews and Counterfeit Businesses: The Extensive Scam Revealed on Google Search and Maps

An investigation has uncovered an international fraud network peddling counterfeit business listings and false reviews on Google Maps. This revelation of a large-scale scam involving the sale of fake business profiles and reviews serves as a sobering reminder that ratings, reviews, views, likes, and followers are all frequently bought and sold across the internet and should not be taken at face value without thorough verification. Although companies like Google are attempting, perhaps, to combat fake accounts that profit from their platform and generate substantial revenue, consumers must remain vigilant when seeking services online.
An investigation initiated by a locksmith in Texas revealed an international fraud network that sold tens of thousands of counterfeit business listings via Google Maps. The perpetrators took control of legitimate business profiles and fabricated positive reviews to deceive unsuspecting customers. Here are some ways to identify similar scams and safeguard yourself against them.

Google has found more than 10,000 fraudulent business listings on its widely used Google Maps application, which is available on nearly every smartphone, and has commenced legal proceedings against those behind the fraud. This information was disclosed by CBS Network yesterday (Wednesday). The company's thorough investigation uncovered that this fraud network was actively creating and selling bogus business profiles on its platform.

The Fraud Network and Their Techniques
The scam was first uncovered when a licensed locksmith in Texas observed that an unlicensed locksmith was using his name on Google Maps. A local probe revealed a more extensive scheme, prompting a large-scale investigation. Ultimately, Google chose to eliminate over 10,000 illegitimate listings of this nature from its maps.

These deceptive listings included entirely fictitious businesses as well as hijacked profiles of real businesses, which were copied and modified to promote unauthorized firms. According to Google's legal advisor, Halima Dlayne Prado, when the company receives a notification regarding such fraudulent activity, they promptly act to locate similar fraudulent entries.

This issue is not a recent occurrence. Google has been combating fake businesses that offer services via Google Maps for several years. The scammers would create profiles for existing companies that either lacked official profiles or were not actively managed, adding a real address, a genuine website, or photos, but substituting their own phone numbers for the legitimate ones.

How the Scammers Operate
Once the fraudsters established these fake profiles, Google Maps would frequently recommend these phony companies based on user searches. However, users would unwittingly contact a fraudster masquerading as a legitimate, licensed business. In some instances, it has been suggested that Google benefited from this, as the fraudulent companies would pay for enhanced visibility, improving their rankings in pertinent search results.

Google has indicated that the majority of these fake businesses were locksmiths, towing companies, and other services that people typically seek in emergencies. In such high-pressure situations, individuals often search for local professionals on Google Maps, even if they have never utilized their services before. Unfortunately, rather than reaching a legitimate professional, they could become victims of an imposter.

The Increasing Complexity of Fraudsters
Halima Dlayne Prado noted that the fraudsters were growing more sophisticated. They collaborated with agents around the world and even leveraged social media to expand their fraudulent networks. Google reported that scammers also sold fake positive reviews for businesses, further obscuring negative opinions on social media platforms. In one lawsuit, Google presented an example of a Facebook post showcasing "5-star reviews" for entirely fictitious businesses.

Common Strategies Employed by Scammers
Google's examination revealed that the fraudsters employed various strategies. In some situations, customers would call a legitimate business, but their calls were intercepted and redirected through a lead generation service that connected them to the scammers. Frequently, the fraudster who arrived to render the service would charge significantly inflated prices, exploiting the customer's urgency to have the job completed. Since many customers are under pressure to obtain the service, they are compelled to pay these exaggerated fees.

How to Avoid Being Duped by These Scams
Google advises exercising caution, even during high-pressure situations. Consumers should meticulously verify the website address and phone number of the company they reach out to, ensuring it corresponds with the Google Maps listing. A warning sign should be raised if the company requests unnecessary information, such as an ID number, or insists on unconventional payment methods like gift cards or wire transfers.

To combat such fraud, Google has developed a variety of tools—both automated and analyzed by human analysts. The company claims to have removed or blocked around 12 million fake business profiles each year over the last two years. Additionally, Google stated that it would donate any compensation it receives from legal actions related to this issue to organizations that fight fraud.

Google’s Dedication to Fighting Fraud
Google is dedicated to making Google Maps a more secure platform for businesses and consumers alike. The company has been actively engaged in investigating fraudulent activities and implementing measures to mitigate the rise of fake business listings and reviews. The recent legal actions underscore its persistent efforts to protect the integrity of its services and shield users from fraudulent practices.

Further Insights on Fake Business Listings
Fake business listings on platforms like Google Maps not only deceive consumers by leading them into scams but also damage the reputation of legitimate businesses. Fraudsters can distort the competitive landscape by manipulating search results, granting unfair advantages to fake businesses that mislead customers. Google’s efforts to eliminate fake listings are a critical step in safeguarding both consumers and businesses from these harmful activities.

As the popularity of online platforms and mapping services increases, so does the potential for fraud in these areas. Both businesses and consumers must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to platforms like Google to help prevent the spread of fake listings.
