Average temperatures in June 2025 soared to unprecedented levels across the region
Western Europe experienced its hottest June on record in 2025, with average temperatures reaching 20.49 degrees Celsius, which is 2.81 degrees above the 1991 to 2020 baseline.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that June 30 marked the highest daily average temperature for the month at 24.9 degrees Celsius.
The western Mediterranean Sea also recorded its highest sea surface temperature in June at 27 degrees Celsius, exceeding the average by 3.7 degrees.
The region faced two significant heatwaves during the month, leading to extreme temperatures and health risks.
Parts of Europe endured feels-like temperatures of at least 38 degrees Celsius, and Spain experienced up to 24 tropical nights.
The heatwaves were accompanied by wildfires, flight disruptions, and evacuations in countries like France and Spain.
Globally, June 2025 was the third-warmest on record, with above-average temperatures in areas such as the United States, Canada, and Asia.
Conversely, India and parts of South America experienced colder-than-average temperatures.
Scientists emphasize the importance of sustained efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to stabilize Earth's climate as the world approaches the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold of irreversible climate impacts.
