Earth Records Hottest Day in 84 Years

The Earth experienced its hottest day in 84 years on July 22, with a global average temperature of 17.15 degrees Celsius. The Copernicus Climate Change Service attributes this heat to climate change from burning fossil fuels and deforestation. Experts call for urgent action to transition to renewable energy as temperatures continue to rise.
On July 22, the Earth's global average temperature reached a record high of 17.15 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous day's record of 17.09 degrees Celsius.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported this as the hottest day since at least 1940.

Scientists attribute this rising heat to climate change fueled by burning fossil fuels and deforestation.

These extreme temperatures follow a trend of monthly heat records, with the last twelve months consistently exceeding the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold set by the Paris Agreement.

C3S Director Carlo Buontempo emphasized the unprecedented nature of these temperatures, predicting more records in the future.

Former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres called for urgent global action to transition to renewable energy.

The past decade, from 2015 to 2024, witnessed the highest daily average temperatures on record.

With Antarctic regions experiencing higher-than-average temperatures, scientists speculate that the global temperature might rise even further in 2024.

A Berkeley Earth analysis estimates a 92 percent chance of setting a new annual heat record next year.
