EU Reinforces Commitment to Sanctions Against Russia Amid Ongoing Conflict
European Union officials signal readiness to maintain and expand sanctions in response to Russia's military actions in Ukraine.
Brussels – European Union representatives have reiterated their commitment to maintaining and potentially expanding sanctions against Russia amidst ongoing military operations in Ukraine.
Anitta Hipper, spokesperson for the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, emphasized the EU's stance, asserting, "YOU CANNOT TRUST PUTIN," and confirming that in the absence of a ceasefire, the EU is prepared to explore further sanctions.
The EU aims to increase pressure on Russia to diminish its capabilities and to position Moscow unfavorably should negotiations with Kyiv commence to resolve the conflict.
The European Commission is poised to propose new restrictive measures for consideration by member states.
The 27 EU member states are nearing an agreement on a 17th sanctions package, which is anticipated to be finalized soon, potentially within the week.
Simultaneously, discussions are already underway regarding a new, additional 18th sanctions package.
Some member states have expressed a desire to intensify sanctions efforts further.
Lithuania’s Finance Minister, Rimantas Sadzius, stated, "WE MUST EXTEND THE RANGE AND WEIGHT OF SANCTIONS, EVEN WITH A 19TH PACKAGE IF NECESSARY."
While Economy Ministers do not hold direct authority over the sanctions, the subject was also discussed at the Ecofin Council meeting.
Sadzius insisted on the necessity of maintaining high pressure on Russia, characterized as the aggressor in the ongoing conflict.
Sweden’s Finance Minister, Elisabeth Svantesson, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the EU's resolve to respond firmly to Russia’s military actions.
"WE HAVE TO BE TOUGH ON RUSSIA," she asserted, reaffirming support for the proposed new sanctions package.
She noted that while existing sanctions are yielding effects, additional measures are warranted, emphasizing that the passage of time is not advantageous for Russia, which is experiencing economic deterioration.
