European Leaders Propose Unconditional Ceasefire in Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict
A coalition of European leaders and the U.S. call for a 30-day ceasefire to facilitate peace talks in Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials have announced readiness to engage in a "full, unconditional" 30-day ceasefire as European leaders convene in Kyiv to discuss potential peace plans.
This proposal could be implemented as early as Monday, contingent upon approval from U.S. President Donald Trump and the Russian government.
The urgent call for a ceasefire was made during a phone discussion involving British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and newly appointed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, thereby creating a united front in support of the U.S. initiative.
This assembly marks a significant occasion as it is the first time that the leaders of these four nations have collectively visited Ukraine.
Early on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed his counterparts at Independence Square, aimed at garnering support for peace in the region.
In his comments on X (formerly Twitter), President Macron emphasized the resilience of the Ukrainian people over the past three years, stating, "You have resisted with admirable courage.
For your land.
For your freedom.
For Europe.
Because yes, the security of our continent is at stake here."
The coalition leaders have collectively urged Russia to cease obstruction of peace negotiations, expressing their commitment to the principles of sovereignty and safety for Ukraine.
Zelensky confirmed his role as host for the coalition discussions, acknowledging "serious work ahead."
A joint statement from Starmer, Macron, Tusk, and Merz reinforced their solidarity with Ukraine, reiterating support for President Trump’s calls for a peaceful resolution.
They stressed the imperative for a 30-day ceasefire to allow for substantive discussions towards a lasting peace.
The planned discussions also involve a virtual meeting with leaders from approximately 30 nations to strategize on the logistics of a potential peacekeeping force, which could support Ukraine's military structure in the aftermath of a ceasefire agreement.
The coalition stated their readiness to support immediate peace talks focused on the technical aspects of the ceasefire and preparations for an enduring peace agreement.
"The bloodshed must end, Russia must stop its illegal invasion, and Ukraine must be able to prosper as a safe, secure, and sovereign nation within its internationally recognized borders for generations to come," the leaders affirmed.
These developments occur following recent communications between Zelensky and global leaders, including Trump and Starmer, during events surrounding Pope Francis's funeral.
On Thursday, President Putin declared a 72-hour ceasefire coinciding with the 80-year anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany; however, Ukrainian officials report that Russian offensive operations continue, undermining the intended cessation of hostilities.
On his platform, Trump indicated ongoing discussions with both Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the U.S. position advocating for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire and highlighting the necessity for accountability in respecting negotiations.
He further warned that failure to observe the ceasefire could result in new sanctions from the U.S. and its allies.
