Thirty-year-old Social Democratic MP Eemeli Peltonen was found dead inside the Parliament House after recent kidney illness and extended medical leave.
Eemeli Peltonen, aged thirty and a member of the Social Democratic Party, was found deceased inside the Finnish Parliament building in Helsinki on Tuesday, triggering an emergency response early that morning.
Parliament’s security alerted emergency services at approximately eleven-oh-six local time.
An ambulance, paramedics and police vehicles were dispatched immediately, and authorities have opened an inquiry, with no suspicion of criminal activity.
Peltonen, who had been elected in 2023 and was serving his first parliamentary term, had recently been on sick leave due to kidney disease and a subsequent bacterial infection that required intravenous antibiotics.
He had missed the end of the spring session and remained absent throughout the summer.
The extent to which his medical condition may have contributed to his death remains undetermined.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo announced the incident during a cabinet meeting, halting political business in parliament and observing a moment of silence in honour of Peltonen.
He described the news as deeply shocking and extended condolences to the MP’s family, colleagues and community.
Peltonen’s parliamentary group issued a statement expressing profound grief, describing him as a beloved member of their community whose young life ended far too soon.
They offered condolences to his family and affirmed that his absence would be deeply felt.
Parliament is currently in recess, with its autumn session scheduled to reconvene on two September.
The national flag of Finland was lowered to half-mast in recognition of Peltonen’s death.
