Sydney Sweeney Registered as Republican as Controversial American Eagle Ad Sparks Debate

Florida voter records confirm Sweeney’s Republican registration amid backlash over denim campaign perceived by critics as racially coded

Actress Sydney Sweeney, star of Euphoria and The White Lotus, has been confirmed as a registered voter with the Republican Party of Florida since mid-June 2024, according to publicly available state records .

The revelation coincides with the release of an American Eagle denim campaign centred on the pun “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” which plays on the words “genes” and “jeans.” In the advertisement, Sweeney mentions that “genes are passed down … often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour,” then adds: “My jeans are blue” .

The campaign provoked widespread online criticism, with many viewers labelling its messaging as tone‑deaf or evoking ideas of eugenics due to its emphasis on physical traits linked to Sweeney’s appearance—blonde hair and blue eyes . Supporters on the conservative side defended the ad and praised Sweeney, citing her political affiliation and characterising backlash as an example of “cancel culture” .

President Donald Trump publicly praised Sweeney’s alignment with the Republican Party and described the advertisement as “fantastic,” saying “now I love her ad,” after her registration became known . Other conservative figures—including Vice President J. D. Vance and Senator Ted Cruz—also voiced support, framing criticism as liberal overreach and celebrating the campaign as culturally resonant .

Amid the controversy, American Eagle stated that the campaign was intended to highlight its denim product and intended no political or racial messaging, later removing the video from its platforms .

Social media users also resurfaced a video from 2019 showing Sweeney at a shooting range, which circulated amid the political context and received attention from conservative commentators .

Public records confirm that Sweeney’s voter registration is listed in Monroe County, Florida, where it is classified as “active,” and the registration date is June 14, 2024 . Sweeney has not issued a public comment regarding her registration or the current controversy.

The incident follows earlier scrutiny in 2022 when images from a family celebration featuring red MAGA-style hats and Blue Lives Matter T-shirts generated speculation about her political leanings. At the time, Sweeney stated that the event was misinterpreted and requested people refrain from making assumptions .
