Tragic Passing of Former AFL Player Adam Selwood at 41
The West Coast Eagles star's passing follows the recent death of his twin brother, sparking tributes from the AFL community.
Adam Selwood, a former professional Australian Rules football player for the West Coast Eagles, has died at the age of 41, as confirmed by a statement from his family.
His death occurred in Perth on Saturday, just three months after the passing of his identical twin brother, Troy Selwood, who also played in the AFL for the Brisbane Lions.
The Selwood family, which includes notable AFL figures such as Geelong champion Joel Selwood and former West Coast and Geelong midfielder Scott Selwood, expressed profound grief in their statement.
They highlighted Adam's roles as a loving husband and father and lamented the loss of his spirit, kindness, and ability to bring joy to those around him.
Adam Selwood played a total of 187 games for the West Coast Eagles, alongside contributing to their 2006 premiership victory, before retiring in 2013. Following his playing career, he joined the Eagles coaching staff, playing a significant role in the establishment of the club's AFLW program as its inaugural head of female football.
John Worsfold, the coach of the 2006 premiership team and current head of football at West Coast, noted Selwood's commitment to the club and his teammates, stating, "Adam was a great teammate who loved the club and loved his footy." Worsfold emphasized Selwood's desire to see the team succeed and grow.
AFL Chief Executive Andrew Dillon also conveyed his condolences, reflecting on the deep pain felt by the Selwood family.
He extended his sympathies to Adam's wife Fiona, their two children, and the entire Selwood family and noted the impact of Adam's passing on friends, colleagues, and teammates across the AFL community.
In February, Adam delivered a heartfelt tribute at the funeral of his brother Troy, whom he described as his "built-in best mate." In his remarks, he reflected on the unique bond twins share, acknowledging the significant void left by Troy's death in his life.
Originally from Bendigo, Adam Selwood moved to Perth after being drafted by the West Coast Eagles in 2002. His contributions to the game extended beyond his playing days, having impacted younger generations of players through his coaching and leadership roles within the club.
