Ukraine Conducts Operations in Russian Border Regions Amid Ongoing Conflict
President Zelenskyy confirms military activities in Kursk and Belgorod as international calls for increased pressure on Russia emerge.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukrainian forces are actively conducting operations in two Russian border regions, Kursk and Belgorod.
This statement marks the first confirmation of such military actions from the Ukrainian leadership.
In a recent video address, Zelenskyy detailed briefings from chief commander Oleksandr Syrskyi regarding the situation along the front lines.
Zelenskyy asserted, "We continue to carry out active operations in the border areas on enemy territory, and that is absolutely just." He emphasized that the operations are aimed at protecting Ukrainian territory and communities, particularly those in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, from ongoing Russian incursions.
Ukraine has maintained a foothold in the Kursk region following an offensive last year, despite continued Russian attempts to repel Ukrainian forces.
The Belgorod region, geographically situated northeast of Ukraine, is approximately 30 miles from Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
International discussions regarding the ongoing conflict have intensified.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of obstructing peace negotiations.
During a meeting with NATO counterparts, Lammy called for increased efforts to apply economic pressure on Russia, stating, "Russia continues to rain down bombs on Ukrainian families, on Ukrainian armed soldiers, and, of course, on Ukraine's infrastructure." He emphasized the need for NATO allies to unify in their approach to address the situation.
In light of these tensions, UK Defence Secretary John Healey is set to lead an upcoming meeting of the "coalition of the willing".
This group, spearheaded by the UK and France, aims to assemble nations willing to contribute to a cooperative defensive force in response to possible future aggression from Russia.
The UK Ministry of Defence has indicated that approximately 30 countries are expected to participate in this initiative, highlighting the broader international engagement in the evolving conflict.
