Vice President J.D. Vance Says He Will Meet President Trump After Midterms to Discuss 2028 Run
Vance signals potential 2028 candidacy while prioritising current role and midterm election effort
Vice President J.D. Vance has said he plans to “sit down” with President Donald Trump after the midterm elections to discuss a possible 2028 presidential run, even as he maintains his current focus on supporting the administration and winning congressional races.
In a televised interview, Vance clarified that the time is not right to make definitive campaign decisions, stating: “We’re going to do everything we can to win the midterms, and then after that, I’m going to sit down with the President of the United States and talk to him about it.
But let’s focus on the now.”
President Trump has previously named both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential picks for 2028, and Vance acknowledged this near-term speculation while signalling there is no rivalry between them.
When asked whether Rubio’s candidacy would complicate matters, Vance responded: “We can cross that bridge when we come to it,” adding that treating Rubio as a competitor “would be ridiculous.”
Vance also addressed economic concerns, attributing current cost-of-living pressures to inherited inflation from the Biden administration and cautioning that recovery could “take a long time” in some parts of the economy.
He emphasised positive signs of improvement but underscored that restoring affordability remains a priority for the White House.
With the midterm elections approaching, Vance’s remarks highlight the administration’s dual push: delivering tangible results for households now, while maintaining strategic positioning for the 2028 Republican nomination.
The post-midterm meeting with Trump is set to clarify how Vance’s role evolves within that broader ambition.
