Guest Collapses During Oval Office Event With President Trump Announcing Drug-Price Plan
White House guest fainted behind President Donald Trump during announcement on weight-loss drug cost reductions; individual is reported stable
A man collapsed behind President Donald Trump in the Oval Office during an event on Thursday aimed at announcing a plan to reduce the cost of weight-loss drugs.
The incident occurred while the event was underway, prompting cameras and press to be immediately escorted out of the room.
The man was identified as a representative from one of the pharmaceutical companies involved in the announcement.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the White House Medical Unit responded swiftly and confirmed that the individual was “okay”.
President Trump later addressed the interruption, stating: “He got a little bit light-headed… but he’s fine.
We just sent him out, and he’s got doctor’s care.”
Dr. Mehmet Oz, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, rushed to assist as the man began to collapse, and other attendees helped support him.
At the time, Eli Lilly’s Chair and Chief Executive Officer David Ricks said that the man was one of the company’s guests and was now doing “great” after the medical episode.
The event had been focusing on the administration’s plan to lower patient costs for medications such as those used for obesity and diabetes treatment and had drawn attention for its major health-policy implications.
While the primary agenda resumed after the brief disruption, the moment was widely captured by media and social-media platforms.
The cause of the collapse was not disclosed by White House officials.
As the session proceeded, President Trump emphasised the cost-reduction plan and thanked the involved companies, while again noting the attendee’s recovery.
“We had a little bit of an interruption, but the gentleman is fine,” he told the press.
The administration intends to continue the rollout of its initiative to make weight-loss drugs more affordable for Americans.
