130 Arrested at NYU: Pro-Palestinian Protests Disrupt Prestigious Universities
Over 130 people were arrested during pro-Palestinian protests at New York University, one of several prestigious American universities experiencing disruptions due to student demonstrations over the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The protests follow Hamas's deadly invasion of Gaza on October 7, sparking debates and campus unrest.
Protests demanding free speech rights and against intimidation and hate speech have intensified at universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Columbia.
During Passover celebrations on Monday night, 133 people were arrested at NYU after refusing to disperse and additional protesters breached the encampment barriers.
The NYPD was called in, and all were released with court summonses.
Similar protests have also occurred at Yale and Columbia University.
The universities are struggling to find a balance between students' free speech rights and preventing intimidation and hate speech.
A spokesperson for a school announced on their website on Monday that a situation had "dramatically changed" due to disruptive and antisemitic behavior during a protest on the school plaza.
The spokesperson cited "disorderly, disruptive and antagonizing behavior," as well as "intimidated chants and several antisemitic incidents." The school requested assistance from the NYPD, who urged protesters to leave peacefully but ultimately made several arrests due to safety concerns.
