China Bans Nvidia AI Chips as Beijing Accelerates Drive for Semiconductor Independence
Regulator orders major tech firms to halt purchases of Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D, citing strength of domestic alternatives
China’s Cyberspace Administration has instructed leading technology companies, including Alibaba and ByteDance, to stop purchasing Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D AI chips and cancel existing orders.
The directive also bans further testing of the chip, reinforcing earlier restrictions on Nvidia’s H20 processors.
Regulators argue that domestic chipmakers now provide alternatives that match or exceed the performance of the restricted imports, particularly for large-scale AI and data centre applications.
The order underscores Beijing’s determination to achieve semiconductor self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on U.S. technology.
Nvidia shares fell by around one percent in early trading after reports of the decision.
