Columbia University: Police Arrest Protesters, Clear Occupied Building; Dozens Detained

Police arrested and dispersed protesters who had occupied Hamilton Hall at Columbia University for over two weeks.
The protesters, who were advocating for Palestinian rights, had barricaded themselves in the building and unfurled a banner in tribute to a Palestinian child killed by the Israeli military.

On Wednesday, New York police officers in tactical gear and helmets entered the campus and climbed up to the second floor of Hamilton Hall to make arrests.

This incident is one of many university protests in the US regarding Palestinian rights.

Police have cleared an occupied building at New York University and arrested over 50 protesters, following large-scale demonstrations against Israel's war in Gaza on several US university campuses.

The protests have resulted in arrests of students, with some vowing to continue despite threats of expulsion.

New York Mayor Eric Adams earlier blamed "outside agitators" for turning peaceful protests into violent spectacles before the police intervention.

A university president has requested help from the New York police to clear encampments on campus and prevent their reestablishment, following a contentious situation at Hamilton Hall.

The White House has criticized the storming of the hall but supports peaceful protests.

The president of Columbia University, Minouche Shafik, has asked for police intervention to end the situation immediately.
