Disney and DeSantis allies end legal dispute over control of theme park
Disney and allies of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have settled a legal dispute concerning the future governance of Walt Disney World.
This resolution follows a judge's decision affirming the state's right to alter the park's district government. The conflict, lasting nearly two years, was initially ignited by Disney's opposition to a Florida legislation limiting discussions on sexuality in schools.
The agreement was approved by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board, marking a new phase of cooperation. Jeff Vahle, Disney World Resort president, expressed satisfaction, noting the settlement facilitates further investments and job creation in Florida.
The feud began when Disney criticized Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act, leading DeSantis to revoke Disney's self-governing privileges, a power it held for over 50 years.
DeSantis now appoints the board governing the park. Prior board members' attempts to secure certain controls for Disney were declared "null and void" under the new settlement, addressing both parties' litigation.
