Trade law invoked to bypass Hungary and Slovakia veto threats
The European Union has announced a plan to prohibit the signing of new gas import contracts with Russia by using trade law mechanisms to sidestep potential vetoes from member states such as Hungary and Slovakia.
The proposal is part of the bloc’s broader effort to reduce energy dependence on Moscow in response to the ongoing geopolitical crisis and war in Ukraine.
If adopted, the measure could reshape Europe’s energy procurement landscape.
