Google Workers File Complaint Alleging Illegal Firings for Protesting Israeli Contract
Google fired 28 employees for protesting against the company's cloud contract with the Israeli government, according to ex-Google workers.
A complaint was filed with the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) alleging that Google unlawfully terminated the employees for exercising their rights to advocate for better working conditions under US labor law.
Google has reportedly fired 28 employees who protested against Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract with Amazon.com to provide services to the Israeli government.
The workers claimed that the project supported the development of military tools, while Google stated that it was not involved in classified or military work.
Zelda Montes, a former Google employee who was arrested during a protest, accused the company of suppressing organizing and sending a message against dissent.
Google and the Israeli government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Google is under investigation by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for allegedly trying to intimidate employees who filed a complaint seeking reinstatement to their jobs and back pay.
The workers claim that Google violated their rights to organize.
The NLRB general counsel, who acts as a prosecutor in such cases, is reviewing the complaint and attempting to settle it if deemed appropriate.
